The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
Based on the play Parfumerie by Miklos Laszlo (originally titled Illatszertar.) A Budapest gift-shop clerk and the newly hired shopgirl hate each other almost at first sight. At work, they argue incessantly, never suspecting that they are carrying on a tender romance through the mail, as anonymous pen pals. Later remade as the movie musical In the Good Old Summertime, and the modern rom-com You’ve Got Mail. Starring James Stewart, Margaret Sullavan, and Frank Morgan. Directed by Ernst Lubitsch.
