The Tempest

North Coast Repertory Theatre

The North Coast Repertory Theatre continues its 29th season with The Tempest by William Shakespeare.

The Tempest is believed to have been written in 1610–11, and is thought by many critics to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone. It is set on a remote island, where Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skillful manipulation. He conjures up a storm, the eponymous tempest, to lure his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to the island. There, his machinations bring about the revelation of Antonio’s lowly nature, the redemption of the King, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso’s son, Ferdinand.

The production is directed by David Hamilton.  Hamilton has been active in theatre on and off stage for the last 14 years in Humboldt County.  He has been directing productions for ten years.  Hamilton believes thatThe Tempest, “though one of Shakespeare’s shortest plays, showcases the bard’s writing ability at its finest since it was written late in Shakespeare’s career.  It’s a spectacle play filled with magic and humor.  Rarely in history has a play inspired so many poets and artists.  From paintings and poems to science fiction, our culture is filled with references to this play.  It captures our imagination in a way that his political plays cannot.”

The talented cast features Scott Malcolm as Prospero, Kate Haley as Miranda, Chyna Leigh as Ariel, Kenneth Wigley as Caliban, Ken Klima as Antonio, and Bob Service as Alonso. Scenic and lighting designs are by Calder Johnson; costume design by Pat Hamilton; and sound design by Gabriel Groom. Alex Service will stage-manage the production.
