They Call Us Monsters Event

The Humboldt IPA’s Young Men’s Council Empowerment Group will be hosting the second annual Conversation Series with Rx Safe Humboldt and Project Rebound. 

   Over the next 2 months, there will be 3 events. The first will be a showing of the film: They Call Us Monsters. This screening will take place at two of our empowerment sites located at Mckinleyville High School, and the Humboldt County Juvenile Hall. The dates and times will occur as follows;

  • April 18th and 25th and McKinleyville High School
  • April 20 th and 27th4/20 and 4/27 Humboldt County Juvenile Hall.

On May 2nd and 3rd students will have the opportunity for a meet and greet with Jarad Nava, who has a central story in the film. This event will take place on May 2nd at Humboldt County Juvenile Hall and  May 3rd at McKinleyville High School. These events are for students only and will be closed to the public. 

The third event held on May 3 rd will be a public film screening of They Call Us Monsters and a community presentation by Jarad Nava & Rx Safe Humboldt. Both parts of this event will take place at the  HCOE Sequoia Conference Center. . The film screening will be from 1:30-3:30pm and the community presentation will take place between 3:30-5pm. Individuals who are interested in attending this event are encouraged to RSVP by emailing vvrtiak@humbodltipa.com. This event will also be streamed on zoom. 

The first two events are for the students attending the Young Men’s Council Empowerment Group which is a peer support group focused on prevention, and supporting male identifying youth as they transition into becoming men. This will be an incredible opportunity for the youth participants of our Young Men’s Council as well as our community partners to engage in critical conversations regarding our criminal justice system.
