A board meeting for the financially-challenged National Theatre of the Woods is caused awry when members are trapped in the local grange after the town bridge collapses due to tumultuous weather.
Tommy Titlinger, the burnt out artistic director (played by Fields), calls upon his colleagues to enact a zany version of A Christmas Carol to pass the time. Will it help raise the organization’s bottom line? Can the board ever make a decision? Wait, what’s the actual mission of this theater?
A wild theatrical, comic, farce for the season, this world premiere was spurred by national non-profit theater crises felt everyday. With incompetent boards, bureaucratic funders, and staff who aren’t paid enough, it’s no wonder theaters continue to struggle. Alas, the desperation-driven decisions to cast stars and produce family-friendly well-known titles (read: A Christmas Carol) leave us pondering many of these organizations’ roles in their communities.
The cast of Yet Another Non-Profit Christmas Carol features local favorites Alex Blouin, William English III, Michael Fields, Cynthia Martells, Natasha Samuelson and Michael Thomas. Additional creative team members include Lynnie Horigan as scenographer, Michael Foster as lighting designer, and Sabine John as assistant director. This show marks Roman Sanchez’s triumphant return to Humboldt County theater after seven years of supporting from afar.
