You Can’t Take It With You
At first the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder. In contrast to these delightful people are the unhappy Kirbys. The plot shows how Tony, attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening…. This comedy was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1937. The NCRT production opens at 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 19 with a benefit performance for the cast and crew.
You Can’t Take It With You is directed by Mack Owen. Mack has been involved in theatre for over 50 years. His studies in theatre included time at the University of Nebraska, El Camino College, San Diego State, Long Beach State, UCLA, and with Jack Manning in Los Angeles. Except for a staged reading of Girl Science, a winner in the Earth First Playwriting Festival at HSU and commercials for Channel 3, You Can’t Take It With You is Mack’s first directorial assignment since coming north to Humboldt some 23 years ago. As an Equity actor, Mack cannot perform in non-Equity plays, but he has lent his talents in various ways to over a dozen productions in Humboldt over the last several years. Outside of Humboldt, Mack has been involved with over 200 plays, movies, commercials, and industrial films, generally as an actor but also as director, lighting designer, writer, producer, or in a variety of other technical areas. His non-Humboldt directing credits include Shadow Box, The Diary of Anne Frank, You Know I Can’t Hear You When The Water’s Running, and Sweet Bird of Youth. Non-Humboldt acting credits include roles in Foxfire, Hamlet, The Good Doctor, Carousel, Charlotte’s Web, and many others.
Owen describes the play as “perhaps the most successful collaboration of the very successful team of Moss Hart & George S. Kaufman. Television and movie versions were done of it. Perhaps the most telling measure of its value, however, is the influence it had on comedy in general, and the development of television in particular. The play explores the interaction of two very American, very different, views of success. One has to do with doing what is expected and judging success by the size of one’s bank account. The other has to do with doing what you like and measuring success by the size of your happiness. It posits the two, often conflicting, aspects of American culture against each other. Because we recognize both sides as parts of ourselves, we enjoy the comic interchange because we identify with both sides of the argument.” The talented cast features David Simms, Evan Needham, Ken Klima, Lora Canzoneri and Molly Harvis along with a supporting cast of eleven actors. Scenery and lighting designs are by Calder Johnson. Costume design is by Jenneveve Hood. Kira Gallaway will stage-manage the production.
