Explore North Coast and the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center as co-sponsors invites the public to their Lecture Series on Killer Whales Here and Worldwide featuring Jeff Jacobsen. Jeff will talk about the recent increase in sightings of the mammal eating type of killer whales along the Northern California coast. On 30 May a group of six were observed off of Fort Bragg ‘playing’ with sea birds. The next day another group was photographed by a local fisherman leaving Humboldt Bay with a sea lion they had just killed. On 12 June eight other killer whales were seen off of Eureka. Jeff Jacobsen (who began studying wild killer whales forty years ago) will review the world wide behavioral biology of this top predator - their morphology, genetics, acoustics, dietary preferences, culture - and their interactions with other species. He’ll then focus on the Pacific Northwest, and the changes observed along our coast over the past decade. Our collective understanding of individual wild killer whales and their families has grown in large part to observations and photographs by the public ashore or out in boats. Jeff’s goal is to increase the reporting of killer whale sightings and sharing of opportunistic photos. There will be time for anyone to share their stories, photos, and ask questions. The lecture is scheduled for Monday, July 15th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921, Waterfront Drive, Eureka. Admission is free.
