ENC/HBAC Lecture Series
Explore North Coast and the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center as co-sponsors invites the public to their Lecture Series on Great White Sharks featuring Dr. Taylor Chapple. The title for Dr. Chapple’s talk is “Who is Jaws? Separating fact from fiction.? Dr. Chapple is professor at Hatfield Marine Science Center of Oregon State University. Taylor has been working with sharks around the world for nearly 20 years. Using cutting edge technology, rigorous science and engaging media platforms Taylor has been working to use science to change how we think about sharks. Drawing from his research on white sharks in California, Cape Cod and South Africa, Taylor will be discussing how we perceive sharks and the reality behind the hype. The lecture is scheduled for Friday, February 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921, Waterfront Drive, Eureka. Admission is free. For more information e-mail info@explorenorthcoast.net or call 707-616-0016. Research Areas: Sharks, marine predators, animal movements, biologging and energetics. Taylor’s research has primarily focused on large marine predators, most notably sharks. His background is in population modeling of difficult to assess species, though more recently he is focused on using technology (biologging and telemetry tags, etc.) to understand the movements and behavior of marine animals and their life history and ecosystem consequences. Taylor is also committed to bridging the gap between science and the public through outreach and education.
