ENC/HBAC Lecture Series

Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center

Explore North Coast and the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center as co-sponsors invites the public to their Lecture Series featuring Gary Friedrichsen. Gary will be doing a video-slide presentation on local marine mammals with hints on how to identify them from a kayak. The lecture is scheduled for Monday July 10th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921, Waterfront Drive, Eureka. Admission is free. Gary graduated from Humboldt State University in 1974 and began seasonal work with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) as an observer aboard U.S “flagged” tuna seiners that were operating in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. This work led to research cruises aboard NOAA vessels conducted by the NMFS laboratory in La Jolla, California. For many years he was able to spend winters doing research on the tuna/porpoise by-catch issues and spend summers commercial fishing salmon, albacore, and rockfish on his own boat here in Humboldt County. His duties while working for NMFS generally consisted of marine mammal identification and school or population estimations. This was “line transect” work where they maintained daylight observation using 75X150 power binoculars and took photos whenever possible. They also conducted research on turtles, flying fish, and seabirds. As part of their daily tasks, they preformed standard oceanographic measurements and a range of net sampling (i.e. Neuston, Manta, and oblique Cobb trawls). In later years he began working as a consultant with various entities. This included work as an aerial observer for dolphins, Bowhead Whales, and Harbor Porpoise in both helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. He also worked as the Protected Species Observer aboard seismic vessels including work with Cornell University and Scripps Institute of Oceanography. He has worked as a marine mammal tour guide for Biological Journeys and for G.A.P. out of Toronto, Canada. In all he has spent over ten years of his life at sea doing research and twenty-two years fishing commercially for salmon, albacore and Dungeness crab.
