Explore North Coast & HBAC Lecture Series
Explore North Coast and the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center as co-sponsors invites the public to their Lecture Series featuring Dr. Jeff Black. Jeff will describe plans for a new project aiming to merge Citizen Art with Citizen Science. Participants in this and other Citizen Science projects discover, learn, and report their findings. Including citizen participation in scientific studies has the added benefit of engendering a real-time ownership in the subject, in this case, in River Otters and the health of their (and our) habitats. Building a sense of care and concern for nature and the environment is often times the goal behind the natural images captured by artists, photographers, and videographers. In this proposed project, we will merge these two fields (art and science) The lecture is scheduled for Monday October 9th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921, Waterfront Drive, Eureka. Admission is free. Jeff has been a professor in the Wildlife Department at HSU for 20 years. He completed his Ph.D. in Zoology at the University of Wales, Cardiff (in the UK) in 1987 and worked with The Wildfowl Trust in England before coming to HSU in 1998. He held adjunct professor positions over there too, while researching various migratory goose populations in the Arctic. He has published more than 100 research papers (many with student coauthors) and a few books, including one on waterfowl ecology and conservation. He is currently working on a book about the impact of Polar Bear depredation on bird colonies in the Arctic. For more information contact info@explorenorthcoast.net
