Explore North Coast Lecture Series
Explore North Coast invites the public to their program featuring Dr. Brian Tissot, Director of the Humboldt State University Marine Lab on Monday Jan 12th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921, Waterfront Drive, Eureka. The title of Dr. Tissot’s presentation is “Marine Research on the North Coast and the Sea Star Wasting Disease.” The talk will describe ongoing marine research projects conducted by Humboldt State University’s faculty and students, including studies on the newly created marine protected areas along the north coast. Research focused on the ongoing sea star wasting disease will be described along with results of recent surveys. The talk will also discuss planning efforts by HSU’s newly created Humboldt Marine and Coastal Science Institute. Tissot Biography Dr. Brian Tissot is a marine ecologist with experience conducting research in intertidal zone, kelp forest, coral reef, and deep-reef ecosystems. He received his BS in Biology from Cal Poly (SLO), his MS in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology from UC Irvine, and his Ph.D. in Zoology from Oregon State University. He has held faculty positions at the University of Hawaii and Washington State University and currently serves as the Director of the Marine Laboratory at Humboldt State University. His research is focused on the interface between biology, management, and policy and examines ecological interactions between habitat and commercially important marine fishes and invertebrates and the role of the community in managing marine resources. Through collaboration with state, federal and international agencies he is involved in a range of activities including basic research, research with implications towards resource management, and environmental policy development in Hawaii, Washington, Oregon and California. He has published over 70 papers in technical reports and scientific journals and has been awarded over $8 million in research grants in his career. Brian’s work has been featured in Scientific American, Smithsonian magazine, the Washington Post and in several films.
