Explore North Coast Lecture Series

Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center

Explore North Coast invites the public to a free presentation by Jeff Jacobsen, marine mammalogist, bioacoustician, on Monday, November 9th from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921 Waterfront Drive, Eureka. A returning guest speaker, Jeff will present his work with whales, with a focus on cetacean bioacoustics. He will describe the current whale research techniques, the wide range of sounds that cetaceans make for navigation, hunting and communication, and talk about cetaceans as excellent examples of animal tradition and cultural evolution. Much of his presentation will feature recordings of actual whale sounds. This event is being co-produced with the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center. BIO-Jeff is an associate biology faculty member at HSU and works part-time for Bio-waves.net. He started listening to whales in the wild, dangling hydrophones from boats, in the late 1970’s. Since then, Jeff has traveled to most of the extents of the North Pacific, including the Galapagos, Marianas Islands, Okinawa, South China Sea, Russia, Chukchi Sea in Arctic, Aleutian archipelago Bering Island to Kodiak, all of the inside passage, Glacier Bay to Friday Harbor, most of this coast, Gulf of California, Archipelago Revillagigedo (Islas Socorro y Clarion), Costa Rica, and the Hawaiian archipelago. Jeff estimates if he added up all of his time on the water studying whales it would be 6+ years. For more information contact info@explorenorthcoast.com
