Family Fun Series: Bear in the Backyard

Arcata Playhouse

Playhouse Arts presents Bear in the Backyard, an all-ages theatrical adventure filled with shadow puppetry, live music, and laugh-out-loud physical comedy. Part of the beloved Family Fun Series by Playhouse Arts, this original “live animation” production invites audiences into a backyard where anything can happen… especially when a bear shows up.

Dusty has never met a challenge she couldn’t handle alone. Building her own house? No problem. Growing all her own food? No problem. She’s always done just fine, until a mysterious new neighbor arrives. Suddenly, her garbage cans are trashed, her apple trees are in ruins, and her morning routine has taken a very unfortunate turn. It seems Dusty may have finally met her match.

Bear in the Backyard blends live actors, silhouetted performers, cutout sets, and handmade puppets into a playful, visually rich storytelling experience. With its inventive staging and whimsical spirit, the show explores themes of nature, resilience, and the unexpected joys of community. Perfect for kids, families, and anyone who delights in a little theatrical magic, Bear in the Backyard is a joyful reminder that sometimes the biggest surprises lead to the most meaningful connections.

The ensemble features Evan Grande as Bear/Turk, Victoria Timoteo as Bell/Deputy Pancake, and Alex Hilsee as Dusty. The production is directed by Jackie Dandeneau, with stage management by Ruthi Engelke.

Written by Tyler Olsen, the show features lighting design by Michael Foster, set design by Alex Hilsee, projections by Victoria Timoteo, and props and puppets created by the ensemble. Costumes are designed by Laura Rhinehart.

Sponsored in part by The Humboldt County Office of Education Seats to Theaters program, and the Humboldt Area Foundation, the Family Fun Series brings nearly 1,000 students to the theater during the week, with a few public showings offered April 24-26.
