Final Fall ERFSA Presentation

Baywood Golf and Country Club

Cal Poly Humboldt ERFSA (the Retired Faculty and Staff Association) is pleased to announce its final fall luncheon presentation at Baywood Country Club, 3600 Buttermilk Lane in Arcata, on Tuesday, December 12. Our guest presenter will be Emma Breacain, Executive Director at the Humboldt Literacy Project. It connects adults aged 18 and over who wish to improve their reading and writing with adult volunteer tutors for free, confidential, one-on-one English language tutoring. For most of us, reading is such an integral part of daily life we almost take the ability for granted. However, in Humboldt County, an estimated 13,800 adults are functionally illiterate—reading below a fifth-grade level. Another 23,000 people in our county read below an eighth-grade level. Since 1981, the Humboldt Literacy Project has been working to raise the level of literacy in Humboldt County and improve the quality of life in our community.

The Humboldt Literacy Project believes that all adults can learn and have the right to privacy and confidentiality. They try to foster a non-judgmental environment that promotes mutual respect, trust, openness, comfort, and hope. Their tutoring is learner-centered. Their Mission is to teach adults in Humboldt County the literacy skills they need on the job, at home, and in our community while increasing public awareness regarding the magnitude and negative effects of illiteracy.

The Humboldt Literacy Project has programs in basic literacy with support for native English speakers and family literacy programs that encourage families and households to share the fun and challenge of reading, writing, and playing together. They also have programs on “English as a Second Language” with support for non-native speakers acquiring English. Additionally, they help incarcerated individuals improve their skills and prospects, during confinement and after re-entry.

Please attend our final fall presentation and learn more about the Humboldt Literacy Project. Attendance is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be served and coffee and water will be available. Participants are invited to bring their own sack lunches if desired. Stay tuned for news of the slate of exciting presentations planned for the spring when our meeting dates will change to Wednesdays at the Country Club.
