FOAM Lecture on eDNA and Fish
Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center
Cal Poly Humboldt Master’s student Alec Bauer will present “Using eDNA Meta-barcoding to Monitor Fish Diversity in Northern California.” His research—performed in collaboration with Sovereign Nations in Humboldt and Del Norte counties—uses innovative genetic sampling techniques to extract fish DNA from sites of significant interest to the participating Tribal Nations. He samples 12 sites along a 100-mile stretch of coastline, taking the samples to a lab for extraction of genetic material to determine the presence of up to 500 fish species.
