FOAM Lecture: The Relationship between Pacific Treefrogs and Non-native Blackberries

Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center

Cal Poly Humboldt wildlife student Lindsey Mountz is researching the relationship between vegetative type and Pacific treefrog occupancy in the Gannon Slough Wildlife Area. Twenty 10x20 meter plots with varying plant cover (e.g., Himalayan blackberry, twinberry honeysuckle, grasses) are being surveyed, to measure soil moisture, soil and air temperature, blackberry cover, and abundance of flying insects available as food. In her senior project — partially funded by Friends of the Arcata Marsh — Lindsey aims to determine whether there is a correlation between invasive blackberry presence and treefrog populations.
