Food Commons

Community Wellness Center

The Humboldt Food Policy Council is hosting a community Forum on April 25, 2017, from 5:30-7:00 PM at the Community Wellness Center 908 7th Street in Eureka. The Forum will be presented by The Food Commons, an organization developing a new way of creating sustainable regional food systems. The Food Commons Development Director, Warren King and Coordinating Director, Jamie Harvey will join the HFPC via teleconference, and present their experience and models that are currently working. The Food Commons model is a networked system of physical, financial and organizational infrastructure that allows new local and regional markets to operate efficiently, and small to mid-sized food enterprises to compete and thrive according to principles of sustainability, fairness, and public accountability. Food Commons prototype sites are locally owned, operated and administered by their communities. Discussion Topics include • What is a sustainable local food system? • How does a more sustainable local food system stimulate the local economy? • How can land be preserved for food production? • How could a Food Hub in Humboldt County increase the local food economy and contribute to a healthy community?
