Forest Ecology Lecture: McKay Community Forest
Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center
This lecture will discuss the geographic and social factors that led to the opportunity for a new community forest around Humboldt Bay, and present the County’s overall strategy for making the McKay Community Forest a valued community asset and vibrant place. Creation of the McKay Community Forest initiates a long-term process of integrating formerly privately owned timberland into a community context and establishing a forest management approach that aligns with the community’s values. Continuation of a working forest is essential to financial viability. Success will depend on robust public involvement and working together to balance the ecological, social, and economic elements of community forestry.
