‘Equatorial Guinea Bird Initiative’

Sequoia Park Zoo

Join Jared Wolfe from the US Forest Service and the Klamath Bird Observatory for a talk about the realities of pioneering avian research and conservation in a country that is remarkably unknown to ornithologists. The Equatorial Guinea Bird Initiative is an exciting and challenging conservation program, the goal of which is to document the unknown and sensitive avifauna of this fascinating central African country. No one knows how many populations, species and subspecies of birds exist here as they have not yet been discovered, and yet are at risk of being lost due to the new and burgeoning oil industry and fast paced development. During his presentation, Jared will introduce the birds, forest and people of Equatorial Guinea and talk about the programs developed to identify the birds. Jared Wolfe, PhD, has operated bird banding stations throughout the Western Hemisphere and Africa for academic, non-profit, governmental, and private organizations. He received his BS and MS from Humboldt State University, is a Costa Rica Bird Observatories scientific adviser, Bluebonnet Bird Monitoring Project founder and director, NABC certified trainer and current NABC board member serving as a trainer-at-large. He completed his PhD at Louisiana State University studying landscape demography and genetics of Amazonian birds in Brazil. A reception will be held from 6:30-7:00 pm, with the lecture taking place from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. Admission is free of charge.
