Friday Night at the Refuge

Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge

The Shorebird Loop Trail and Visitor Center will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.. Enjoy a walk along the trail in the evening hours and a presentation entitled ” The Importance of Humboldt Bay to Non-Breeding Shorebirds” with Mark Colwell. As the second largest estuary in California, Humboldt Bay provides important habitat for wildlife year-round. Humans value these same intertidal habitats for recreation and commerce, which presents a challenge from the perspective of “sustainable development.” In principle, development is sustainable when it does not compromise the ecology of the bay, including wildlife populations. Accordingly, a group of citizen scientists and professionals were organized to estimate shorebird abundance during spring migration and winter of 2018-19. Come learn more about the findings that affirm recognition of Humboldt Bay as a Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network Site of Hemispheric Importance. Mark Colwell, is a professor in the Wildlife Department at Humboldt State University where he has taught for 30 years and supervised ~50 graduate students in research on shorebirds. Mark authored a book on the Ecology, Conservation, and Management of Shorebirds (2010), and edited a multi-author volume on The Population Ecology and Conservation of Charadrius Plovers (2019). Meet at Richard J. Guadagno Headquarters & Visitor Center, 1020 Ranch Road in Loleta.
