Ghosts In Gaelic Green

Old Town Coffee And Chocolates (Old Town)

Although Ireland is well known as a land of music and merriment, with the rough beauty of its seaside cliffs and ancient ruins and the friendliest people to walk to earth, it is ancient land filled with traditions and legends, and the ghosts and creatures that haunt the Emerald Isle are much a part of the Irish. The Faeries (also known as “The Gentry”), the Banshee, the Pooka, the Green Man, the Dearg-Dur (a vampire) and, of course, the Leprechaun, haunt their dreams and nightscapes. Ireland was the birthplace of our Halloween celebrations; so it will come as little surprise that when everyone gathers to celebrate St .Patrick’s Day, a ghost or two may be attending as well. Our local wandering spirit Carpathian invites one and all, old and young to put on their finest greenery and join him for an evening of tales designed to lift your spirits and chill your blood. GHOSTS IN GAELIC GREEN will be held on the Holiday itself, Friday, March 17 at 7:00 pm at Old Town Coffee & Chocolates. He’ll be joined by three area musicians for a night of macabre merriment, mischief and music. Accompanying your favorite spectral storyteller will be Howard Emerson, master of the steel string-Celtic harp, and Emily Janzen and Liz Thompson on violin and cello, respectively. There’ll be reels, waltzes, ballads and traditional tunes, some with a sense of the eerie and macabre that would do the countryman honor. Carpathian is a professional storyteller who has appeared at numerous venues, film festivals, Renaissance Faires, haunted attractions, libraries and conventions throughout the United States. He was a featured presence for ten years at The Six Flags America FRIGHT FEST in Largo, MD, leading his company The Patient Creatures. Carpathian was nominated in 2003 for a Rondo Hatton Award for Special Presentation and in 2002 for Outstanding Media Presentation for his CD, “3 Tales of Carpathian.” His stories run the gamut from classic campfire tales and spooky shaggy-dog stories to macabre fables and urban legends. He is equally at home before a mixed family audience, a midnight crowd of adult enthusiasts, or a gaggle of giggling children. Howard Emerson is a musician with an eclectic mix of traditional Irish and Scottish airs as well as American folk ballads, a variety of popular tunes, and his own compositions and improvisations. He has played in a variety of venues on the East and West Coast, and has four recordings of his Celtic harp music. Emily Janzen and Liz Thompson have performed both separately and together with various groups and Celtic music sessions on the Lost Coast. Come join the celebration in songs, stories and spookery to commemorate the magical the Land of Saints, Scholars, and a spectre or two! Sláinte!
