Gulls Gone Wild
Jill Demers, former Executive Director of the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory and current Humboldt Bay Initiative Coordinator, will describe how the breeding population of California Gulls in the Bay has increased from just 24 birds in 1980 to over 53,000 in 2014! This whopping surge in numbers has been attributed to the gulls’ extensive use of urban landfills. The California Gull’s ecological impacts on other waterbirds including the Forster’s Tern, American Avocet, and Western Snowy Plover are of great concern to wetland managers within the San Francisco Bay Estuary. Bring a mug to enjoy shade-grown coffee, and come fragrance-free.
