Hansel and Gretel Ballet

Fairy Tale of Dance, Magic, and Sweetness

Eureka, CA – The Dance Scene Studio and Sundance Ballet Company’s 13th annual dance recital will be the classical story ballet of Hansel and Gretel. The two performances will take place on Saturday, June 27 at 7pm and Sunday, June 28 at 2pm at The Eureka High Auditorium with a full cast of Sundance Ballet Company dancers and Dance Scene Studio students.

This sumptuous retelling of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale is a feast for the senses. Sundance Ballet Company members Miles Grant and Lily Cunningham will star as Hansel and Gretel in this timeless classic brought to the stage as an original ballet. Isadora Guimaraes will dance as the Forest Witch who leads Hansel and Gretel into the woods to her candy house. The adventures unfold with spellbinding dance enchantment enhanced by locally hand-built props including the witch’s oven that will delight audiences of all ages. Everyone will be entertained by the adorable young gingerbread, cupcake, and gumdrop dancers, many of whom will be making their stage debuts. Pointe pieces will feature classical renditions from the ballet Giselle performed by Sundance Ballet Company members as the Willis who warn Hansel and Gretel in the forest about the witch. The two-hundred performers include Dance Scene Studio students and Sundance Ballet Company members, apprentices, and Junior Company members.

The show is directed by Carrie Badeaux who says, “This ballet is exciting and really comes to life with all of our interactive set pieces and locally painted backdrops. This is our 13th spring production and it has been so much fun to build this creative show. The oven is a big hit”

Assorted classical music will be the score of the ballet, which is based on the famous 1812 German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. The story is about two siblings abandoned by their parents in the woods who are lured by a witch living in a gingerbread house, only to outsmart her and escape with her treasure. Carrie Badeaux and studio instructors provide original choreography to this spooky and playful tale. Hansel & Gretel is a whimsical and family-friendly ballet, but one scene in the witch’s house features the witch’s dramatic (but humorous) end that may be unsettling for very young children. Parents are encouraged to use their discretion.

The second half of the show is a delight with an array of dances outside of the Hansel and Gretel theme with dance styles including Jazz, K-POP, Tap, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Belly Dance, and Contemporary. The recent regionally award-winning Scene Team will also present three dances by choreographer and coach, Brittney Christensen. The closing showpiece is a remastered thesis project that draws on people’s visual preferences. It incorporates multimedias and states that through shifting vocabularies, it is a reflection of how people are drawn to varying aesthetics-ballet, pop, folk, belly dance-each valid and expressive in their own right. The work honors aesthesis as a form of identity and examines the essence of preference. It includes a Middle Eastern section that is dedicated to Ania Vogel who was a local dancer who passed away last year. The 12 minute piece is by choreographer Carrie Badeaux and is titled, “Aesthetics.” The whole show, including a fifteen minute intermission will run two hours and is appropriate for the whole family ages three and up.
