Happy Hour with Bruce Taylor

Phatsy Kline’s Parlor Lounge

Bruce Taylor Jr. was raised in Beaverton, Oregon, in a household full of all kinds of music. Although influenced by music of all genres over the years, he identifies his Core Four musical inspirations to include Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen, Todd Snider, and Greg Brown. Bruce moved to the Northern California coast in the late 80’s and in 2005, at the age of 42, he began to pen some of his early songs and tried to get others interested in them, including people in Nashville. He walked off the street into a big time Nashville Executive’s office and convinced him to listen to a demo. After a quick 30-second listen, the exec put his high dollar alligator skin boots up on his desk and, working a tooth pick in his mouth said, “You know son, in Nashville our songs have a beginning, a middle, and an end. I think you might be better suited to the alternative market out there in California.” Undaunted, Bruce returned back home and asked a friend to play a couple of his songs. The friend gave him some great advice: “You know Bruce, these are your songs. You need to be the one singing them.” So he took the advice to heart, and over the last three years, he has stayed true to himself, found his voice and own unique style, begun playing out as much as possible, and even began recording his first album. His performances weave stories and humor together, but quickly dive off the cliff into deeper subject matter that coupled with his soulful voice and haunting melodies, will stay with you long after the show…
