Historical Society Workdays this weeked

Timber Heritage Samoa Shops

On Saturday March 25th and Sunday March 26th, the Humboldt County Historical Society will be holding workdays at the Timber Heritage Society’s shops in Samoa to process, organize and catalogue a large collection of historical newspapers, including copies of the Humboldt Standard, Times Standard, and Humboldt Beacon. The workdays will run from 10am to 6pm each day. The Society is seeking volunteers to come help us physically sort, organize, label, catalog, and box materials for ease of storage and further processing and use. Cataloging will also include computer data entry and the creation of an electronic database detailing the range of dates represented in the newspaper materials. Processing and cataloging of these materials will finally allow HCHS to develop an inventory and plan for targeted future digitization with the goal of filling gaps in the existing digital and microfilm record. The Historical Society would like to thank Pacific Paper Company of Eureka for their recent generous donation of boxes to help us better organize and store materials from this collection.

LOCATION: The Timber Heritage Association shops are located at 930 Vance Avenue in Samoa. After entering the community from New Navy Base Road (Highway 255), cross the train tracks and go through the gates near the intersection of Vance Avenue and Cookhouse Road to reach the facility.

About this collection:
Spanning much of the 20th Century these newspapers previously formed the Times Standard’s physical archive, which was housed at the Times Standard’s print shop. In May 2020, when the T-S closed their Eureka print shop and began printing the paper in Chico, the archive could no longer be housed at their facility and stood in jeopardy of being lost to the landfill. Rescue and retrieval of the collection successfully occurred in June of 2020 thanks to the efforts of volunteers and staff from the Clarke Museum and the Historical Society. In September of 2022 the Timber Heritage Association graciously agreed to permit the collection to be temporarily stored at their Samoa facility where there was sufficient space and resources to better provide for storage and processing of the large volume of materials.

About HCHS
Established in 1947, the Humboldt County Historical Society seeks to further an understanding and appreciation of all peoples, places, events, and activities of Humboldt County and related areas. Serving local history for over 75 years we focus on acquiring, preserving, interpreting, creating, and sharing historical information, and by educating and assisting others to do the same. To further these goals, the Humboldt County Historical Society publishes an outstanding quarterly magazine, the Humboldt Historian; maintains a thorough reference library; prints historical books; records and transcribes oral histories of knowledgeable residents; archives valuable collections. We make the information in those collections available to researchers through our Research Center and archive in Eureka, located within the Gross-Wells-Barnum House at 703 8th Street. We are a private non-profit organization supported entirely by our members and donors.
