Thoroughly Modern Millie

Van Duzer Theater

Flash back to the Roaring 20s with Humboldt Light Opera Company’s Thoroughly Modern Millie, for three weekends - August 1 through 17 - at the HSU Van Duzer Theatre. When a Kansas girl comes to the Big Apple, she encounters flappers, working girls and millionaires in disguise as she ventures from high rises to the New York speakeasy scene. Millie finds that few people in the city are exactly as they first appear — and that some old-fashioned morals have staying power even through the turning of an era. The story is based on the 1967 film with Julie Andrews and features an updated script that riffs on classic musicals. The show features three tap numbers, plus dance interludes performed by its romantic leads, Melissa Hinz and Gino Bloomberg. Kevin Richards plays Millie’s boss and “practical” love interest, and newcomer Linnea Hill is Millie’s doe-eyed housemate Dorothy. Katherine Johnson cuts loose into jazz vocals as nightclub singer Muzzy van Hossmere, while Kathleen Ely, Carl McGahan and Jake Smith are a trio of variably evil kidnappers. Thoroughly Modern Millie is directed by Carol Ryder with choral music direction by Amy Chalfant and choreography by Melissa Hinz. The orchestra is conducted by Justin Sousa. Sets are by Jayson Mohatt and the 1920s costume design is by Caroline Allander, Madeline Myers and Carol Ryder. Show times are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., plus Sunday matinees on August 10 and 17 at 2 p.m. Admission is $11-19. Advance tickets for Millie are on sale now at hloc.org or by calling 707-822-1318.
