HSU Calypso Band, Percussion Ensemble, and World Percussion Group

Van Duzer Theater

Please join the HSU Department of Music and directors Eugene Novotney and Howard Kaufman presenting a thrilling evening-long concert featuring the full spectrum of Music for Percussion, from the contemporary music of Europe to the exciting drumming rhythms of West Africa, and from the profound grooves of the Brasilian Samba to the festive steel drum sounds of the Calypso tradition of the Caribbean. Plus, the Calypso Band will perform a world premier of a brand new arrangement of Tito Puente’s “Philadelphia Mambo” written by local Afro-Cuban master drummer, David Peñalosa. This performance will also feature David Peñalosa as the timbale soloist, performing the soloist role that Tito Puente defined so well throughout his 50 plus year career performing Latin Jazz music in the USA. This is a show that will have something for everyone! Saturday, December 2nd @ 8:00 p.m. in the Van Duzer Theatre on the HSU campus. $10.00 general, $5.00 Senior/Child, $3 for HSU students with ID. In the first half of the concert, the Humboldt State Contemporary Percussion Ensemble will perform one of the most exciting and powerful works in the entire percussion ensemble repertoire – Concertino for Two Pianos and Percussion Ensemble, written by Czech composer, Vlacav Nelhybel. This piece is scored for 4-Marimbas, 2-Xylophones, 2-Vibraphones, 2-Sets of Orchestral Bells, 2-Chimes, 4-Low Tom-Toms, 4- High Tom-Toms, 4-Timpani, Bass Drum, and 2-Grand Pianos. Many of the players also play other smaller hand-held instruments at various times throughout the work, including Triangles, Cymbals, Crotales, and Sleigh Bells. Often, the soundscape that the full ensemble creates is powerful and thrilling, and at other moments, it is hauntingly beautiful. Metal sounds play against wood sounds and skin sounds, all accompanied by the two pianos. The modal nature of the melodic and harmonic structures of the work reinforce the powerful spirit of the work, and the combined sounds of all of the instruments playing together at once creates a powerful and dynamic soundscape that is very rarely experienced in person. The Percussion Ensemble will also play exciting and interesting works by Edgart Kopetski (Chant of the Serpent), Mark Ford (Head Talk), and John Bergamo (Piru Bole). The first half of the show will end with a suite of traditional Mandeng Drumming of West Africa, and an inspiring arrangement of traditional Brasilian Samba, presented to the Humboldt audience in its classic form, using all indigenous instruments. The second half of the show will feature the festive dance music of the Humboldt State Calypso Band. One of Humboldt County’s favorite ensembles, the Calypso Band will feature several high-energy dance compositions from the Caribbean in their set, including the 2017 Award Winning Song-of-the-Year in Trinidad & Tobago, Full Extreme. The Humboldt State Calypso Band prides itself in maintaining an accurate and authentic connection to the roots of the steel band movement and the innovative musicians of the Caribbean. The band is dedicated to the performance of traditional and contemporary music from Trinidad, Africa, Brasil, & Cuba. Through their 32-year history of performances at HSU, the Humboldt State Calypso Band has become a virtual “institution” at the university, and stands as one of the most popular musical groups in Northern California.
