HSU Faculty Artist Series: Garrick Woods with John Chernoff

Fulkerson Recital Hall

Please join the Humboldt State University Department of Music, cellist Garrick Woods, and pianist John Chernoff for an evening of mostly original works composed by both musicians titled “Through a Glass Darkly” on Friday, August 30th at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. This Faculty Artist Series concert is presented on the heels of Woods’ inspired spring solo performance with the Eureka Symphony and his recent chamber music performances at the Trinidad Bay Arts and Music Festival. Woods is delighted to share the stage with his colleague, the beloved pianist John Chernoff, as they explore music mostly of their own making, inspired by the themes of love, sincerity, and understanding. $15 General, $5 Child, $5 for HSU students with ID. Woods explains the concert title: “I am always moved when artists can convey the character of the composer. It creates a link of understanding between creator, performer, and audience member. The image remains incomplete though; we still have a degree of separation when these composers are people we don’t know or are long dead. If possible I do not want to be seen ‘in part’ but ‘face to face’ and to be understood as well as possible. The reference is to the biblical passage oft-quoted at weddings in 1 Corinthians 13 expounding on the perfection of the virtue of love. Love, sincerity, and understanding are central themes of the program, with some humor mixed in as well!” Those wishing for some of those “long-dead” composers can revel in the 6th Bach cello suite, one of the brighter and more challenging of these iconic works. The program also includes brief works from two other living composers: a portion of “Songs and Poems,” the 2007 piece by Philip Glass, and a work by HSU alum Sabrina Fisher. Garrick Woods comes from a family of professional musicians and studied music extensively from his earliest years. While cello remains his primary instrument, he has also studied trombone, voice, bass, and conducting. Primary instructors included Mark Votapek, Nancy Green, John Eckstein and Pegsoon Whang, with supplemental instruction from Pamela Frame, Emílio Colón, Steve Balderston, and Janos Starker. Garrick holds Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Arizona and completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Utah in 2016. As a performer, Dr. Woods delivers emotionally stirring performances with understanding of a variety of styles. He regularly performed as a member of the Tucson Symphony, as a substitute for the Utah and Hawaii Symphonies and now serves as principal cello of the Eureka Symphony. Garrick also performed as a studio musician on many television, game, and film soundtracks. He currently holds the title of Assistant Professor of Music at Humboldt State University, teaching cello and bass, and also directs the Humboldt Symphony. Pianist John Chernoff has performed across the United States, including appearances at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, and Symphony Space in New York City. He has worked with a variety of renowned artists such as Libby Larsen, Chen Yi, Amit Peled, Ian Swensen, and Mark Sokol and currently serves as Staff Accompanist at Humboldt State University. John holds degrees from San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, and has served as a performer, accompanist and coach at the Heifetz International Music Institute and Sequoia Chamber Music Workshop. Mr. Chernoff is also a frequent soloist and lecturer with the Eureka Symphony and regularly appears with concertmaster Terrie Baune and cellist/conductor Carol Jacobson for chamber music performances throughout Humboldt County.
