HSU Faculty Artist Series: Welcome Concert
Please join the HSU Department of Music as they present the spring semester Welcome Concert, an occasion that brings together the HSU campus community and the greater Humboldt community for an early evening concert of superb music on Saturday, February 15th at 5:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. This Faculty Artist Series concert will include some of the region’s most popular soloists, who also happen to be HSU music faculty as well. Cellist Garrick Woods and pianist Daniela Mineva will perform the first movement of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Sonata for cello and piano in g minor. This work, first performed in Moscow in 1901 with the composer at the keyboard, presents the cello and piano as equals, rather than placing the pianist in a subordinate role as accompanist. Expect to hear virtuosic playing on both instruments. Clarinetist Virginia Ryder, violinist Cindy Moyer, and pianist Ryan McGaughey will perform a trio called A Renaissance Bouquet by living American composer John Biggs that presents a medley of ten Renaissance tunes re-imagined in a fresh twentieth century context. The Arcata Bay String Quartet, featuring violinists Cindy Moyer and Karen Davy, violist Sherry Hanson, and cellist Garrick Woods, will play the first movement of the String Quartet No 3 in B-flat major by Johannes Brahms. The famously serious Brahms himself described this lively and cheerful work as “a useless trifle…to avoid facing the serious countenance of a symphony.” The joy generated by the ABSQ in this opening movement will prove to be anything but “useless.” Finally, the music of the Italian classical era composer Luigi Boccherini will be presented by guitarist Jennifer Trowbridge in collaboration with the Arcata Bay String Quartet. The “Fandango” movement of his Guitar Quintet in D major just drips with the style and influence of Boccherini’s adopted country of Spain. There is even a point in the work where Woods will abandon his cello and play the castanets instead! Whether or not the quintet will play with roses between their teeth is unknown at press time. $15 General, $5 Child, and $5 for HSU Students with ID.
