HSU Jazz Combos
Please join the Humboldt State University Department of Music and jazz band leader Dan Aldag for an intimate, small-scale approach to instrumental jazz with this semester’s Jazz Combos, featuring four different groups demonstrating a broad range of repertoire, skill sets, and musical possibilities on Saturday, April 20th at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. $10 General, $5 Child, $5 HSU students with ID. Hear the 9:00 Sextet, featuring Ahtziri Ramirez, flute; Matt Wardynski, clarinet, alto sax, and EWI (standing for electronic wind instrument, invented and developed in the 1960s and 1970s); Leo Plummer, guitar; Loren Acosta, bass; Eric Tolfa, bass; and Isaac Saltoon, percussion. They’ll be playing “Bright Size Life” by Pat Metheny, “The Last Word” by Andy Narell, and “One For Tom” by Dave Samuels and Paquito D’Rivera. Next up is Lick Corea, featuring Jesse Garate, tenor sax; Ora Folden, trombone; Conner West, guitar; Ryan Call, bass; and Seth Mattingly, drums. Their repertoire includes “In The Beginning” by Dr. Lonnie Smith, “Undertow” by Mattingly, and “Big Chungas” by Ludwig van Smashmouth. The Tonic Quintet is comprised of Allison Muench, alto sax; Andrew Henderson, trumpet; Max Marlowe, piano; Loren Acosta, bass; and Mike Deason, drums. They’ll be playing “Imperio” and “Doting”, both by Acosta, and “July” by Ben Wendel. The 2:00 Quintet is Jeff Ruiz, trumpet; Daniel Noel, trombone; Nick DeAnda, guitar; Keith Staats, bass; and Justin Ordonez, drums. They’re playing “Red Clay” by Freddie Hubbard; “Four” by Miles Davis, and “Recorda-Me” by Joe Henderson.
