HSU Jazz Combos and AM Jazz Band
Please join the HSU Department of Music as they present this semester’s Jazz Combos, under the leadership of Dan Aldag, sharing this evening long concert with the AM Jazz Band, led by Howie Kaufman, on Thursday, December 12th at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. This is a great chance to hear intimate renditions of charts that range from standards like “Autumn Leaves” and “My Favorite Things” to original student compositions, as well as big band arrangements of blues tunes, New Orleans parade band music, and Weather Report’s famous 70’s chart “Birdland.” $10 General, $5 Child, and FREE for HSU Students with ID. There are two Jazz Combos this semester. The Pizza Conga Combo is Nick DeAnda on guitar, Emilie Silk on bass, Erich Lenk on piano, drums and percussion, and Travis Strong on drums and percussion. They’re playing the standard “Autumn Leaves”; an untitled original by Nick DeAnda, the group’s guitarist; “Ashansu”, which was first recorded by the Brazilian singer and percussionist Carlinhos Brown, and composed by him and Mateus Aleluia Lima; and “It Runs Through Me” by the English musician Tom Misch. Next up is The 3:00 Combos featuring Jeff Ruiz on trumpet, Keith Staats on clarinet, John Morgan on guitar, Ryan Coder on bass, and Seth Mattingly on drums. They are playing “Humboldt Fog” by the group’s drummer Seth Mattingly; “Jimmy Flip” by Jeff Ruiz, the group’s trumpeter; and the standard “My Favorite Things.” The AM Jazz Band will start with “Second Line” which is based off of Joe Avery Blues, a standard piece played by New Orleans parade bands. Next is the classic Bossa Nova “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars,” composed by Antoino Carlos Jobim and arranged by John Berry. “Pots and Pans” by David Berger follows. The title of this piece was inspired by Snooky Young, the great swing lead trumpeter who played with Lunceford, Basie, and Thad Jones in their prime. When the music started cooking, Snooky would flash his beatific smile and proclaim, “Pots and Pans!” Nearly all melodies in this piece come from the blues scale. The set ends with “Birdland” composed by Josef Zawinul and arranged by Michael Sweeney. “Birdland” was a hit for Josef Zawinul’s jazz/fusion group Weather Report. The song is a tribute to the Birdland nightclub in New York City and appeared on the band’s 1977 album Heavy Weather.
