HSU Opera Workshop: Celebrating Handel in Humboldt!

Gist Theater at HSU

Please join the HSU Department of Music and their Opera Workshop for a spring performance titled “Celebrating Handel in Humboldt!” As the name suggests, the show is a celebration of the music of the famous Baroque composer George Frideric Handel and will feature selections from his operas and oratorios woven into a simple tale called “The Pastoral Cantata.” This hour-long production will be sung in English and staged in Gist Hall Theatre, on the HSU campus. Performances will be held on Friday and Saturday evenings, March 23 and 24 at 7:30, and on Sunday afternoon, March 25 at 2:00. $10 General, $5 Senior/Child, $5 for HSU students with ID. “The music is fun, and the opera is colorful and buoyant. This is the perfect piece to welcome the spring with!” Katharine Gunnink, Spring 2018 HSU Opera Workshop director Andrea Zvaleko, the fearless director of the production, is crafting a beautiful and whimsical world filled with fairies and gypsies. The students have been enjoying the freedom of building their own personalities and backstories that feed into the songs, movements, and relationships they have with each other in this dreamscape. The story is endearing and is highlighted with Handel’s florid vocal lines. As the music lends itself to dance, student choreographer Nichole Riffenburgh has set movement on several of the vocal pieces, and is featured as a solo dancer as well. John Chernoff is at the helm at both the piano and harpsichord, and is joined HSU alumna Elizabeth Holverson on the oboe, as well as students Hanah Rolf and Michael Hal filling out the string section. “The Pastoral Cantata” is arranged by Michael Diack. It is a special treat to hear the young soprano Elisha Moore’s voice highlighted in repertoire that sounds as if Handel wrote it with her voice in mind. She plays the role of The Queen and is joined by soloists Caitlin Pyle, Nichole Riffenburgh, Will English, Samuel Brown, and Victor Guerrero, as well as ensemble members Melanie Eastman, Paige Hernandez, Stevy Marquez, Helen Kimber, and Baby Vivian Esenbock. Katharine (Katie) Gunnink is an HSU alumna, graduating with a Bachelor in Music in 2003. She attended San Francisco Conservatory of Music from 2005-2008 where she earned a Masters of Music and also did post-graduate work in Vocal Performance. Since graduating she has been chasing the dream of singing opera all over the US and internationally, all while keeping New York City as her home base. Most recently, Katie was a Resident Artist with Opera San Jose, singing many of her dream roles such as Senta in The Flying Dutchman by Wagner. She is happy to be filling in for Elisabeth Harrington and developing her teaching chops this semester. She has really enjoyed working with the students here at HSU!
