HSU University Singers and Humboldt Chorale

Fulkerson Recital Hall

Please join conductor Rachel Samet for an evening of choral music called “Music Down in My Soul,” featuring the Humboldt Chorale and University Singers. The program features music that reaches for deep emotion, some recalling more primal tendencies such as “Past Life Melodies,” which features overtone singing, an otherworldly sounding singing technique performed by people such as Tuvan monks. Also featured will be the haunting “Ani Ma’Amin (I believe),” the text of which comes from the Jewish principles of faith. It is a prayer that has frequently been set to music, and was intoned by many Jews as they were marched through the Nazi death camps during the Holocaust. In contrast, both ensembles will also explore emotional exuberance through various bluegrass and folk song arrangements, including Aaron Copland’s thrilling setting of the Shaker tune “Zion’s Walls.” The concert will conclude with both groups combined into one massive choir singing the passionate and uplifting gospel tune “Music Down in My Soul” by the great Moses Hogan. Friday, May 5 at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. $8 General, $5 Senior/Child, Free for HSU students with ID.
