HSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra

Fulkerson Recital Hall

Please join the HSU Department of Music as they present a superb mid-semester instrumental music concert featuring the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra on Friday, February 28th at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. $10 General, $5 Child, and FREE for HSU Students with ID. Under the baton of conductor Paul Cummings, the Wind Ensemble will perform Divertimento, opus 42 by American composer and educator Vincent Persichetti. An important and influential composer in his own right, Persichetti also trained a generation of composers at the Julliard School, including the young Philip Glass. American composer David Malanka was best known for his compositions for wind ensemble. His set of Heart Songs, with melodies based on the Chorales of J.S. Bach, are inspired “from the image of watering the tree of life with the blood of the heart.” German composer Carl Orff premiered his most famous work, Carmina Burana, in Frankfurt in 1937. Inspired by medieval poems and dramatic texts in both latin and high german, this cantata, originally composed for orchestra and chorus, has been arranged effectively as a suite for band by American composer John Krance. The familiar melody and driving rhythm of the “O Fortuna” opening movement is reprised in the final movement, and has been used to dramatic effect on film soundtracks, including Oliver Stone’s The Doors. The HSU Jazz Orchestra, led by band leader Dan Aldag, will present four works composed or arranged for big band that will also feature many fine student soloists. In the style of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Juan Tizol’s Caravan, arranged by Bob Washut, features Danyelle Allen on bari sax and Andrew Henderson on trumpet. Bit Of Heaven, composed by Curtis Fuller and arranged by Don Sickler, is a tasty tune by the hard bop trombonist, featuring soloists Eddie Kallen on trumpet, Matt Wardynski on alto sax, and Ora Folden on trombone. Breathing is one of the last compositions written by the late Fred Sturm, who was a prolific and highly respected composer, arranger, and jazz educator. This arrangement is by David Springfield. GG Train by Charles Mingus is named after the subway (now known as simply the G Train) in New York City that runs from Queens to Brooklyn. This arrangement, written for the Mingus Big Band by Boris Kozlov, will feature soloists Andrew Henderson and Jesse Garate.
