HSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra Concert

Fulkerson Recital Hall

Please join the students and faculty of the HSU Department of Music for what is becoming a familiar double feature, the mid-semester concert featuring the HSU Wind Ensemble followed by the HSU Jazz Orchestra on Saturday, October 14 at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. The concert will open with Königsmarsch by Richard Strauss, which will be guest conducted by music faculty member Fred Tempas. Wind Ensemble director Paul Cummings will conduct the pieces that follow, including October by the popular contemporary composer Eric Whitacre, An American Elegy by one of the great living composers for concert band, Frank Ticheli, and the enticingly titled Techno Indulgence, opus 148-C, by the outstanding local composer and woodwind player Michael Kibbe. Allow for a few minutes for resetting the stage and then join band leader Dan Aldag and his Jazz Orchestra for a set of all Thelonious Monk compositions in honor of the centennial of his birth, which is just four days before the concert. Monk, who was posthumously given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2006 was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize for “a body of distinguished and innovative musical composition that has had a significant and enduring impact on the evolution of jazz,” is widely regarded as one of the most significant jazz composers in history, and is the second-most recorded jazz composer of all time (after Duke Ellington). Expect to hear Bemsha Swing, co-written by Barbadan drummer Denzil Best and arranged by Mark Taylor, the quirky Friday The 13th, arranged by Dan Aldag, a Bill Holman arrangement of the beautiful ballad Ruby, My Dear, and one of Monk’s most played compositions, the aptly named Straight, No Chaser. Soloists include Rebekka Sanchez on alto sax, Andrew Henderson and Kevin Blake on trumpet, and Abraham Loaiza on tenor sax. Saturday, October 14 at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. $8 General, $5 Senior/Child, FREE for HSU students with ID.
