HSU Wind Ensemble and The Scotia Band

Fulkerson Recital Hall

Please join the HSU Department of Music Wind Ensemble and the Scotia Band for an afternoon of wonderful instrumental music on Sunday, December 3 at 2:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. The HSU Wind Ensemble has shared concerts with many groups in the past, including the bands from Del Norte High, Eureka High, and Fortuna High, but having the Scotia Band as a guest ensemble is a special treat for everyone. $8 General, $5 Senior/Child, FREE for HSU students with ID. The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Paul Cummings, will start the show, playing familiar music from several centuries including Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring by Bach, March To The Scaffold from Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz, Little Threepenny Music by Kurt Weill, and Russian Christmas Music by Alfred Reed. The Scotia Band, now in its 82nd year, is the oldest continuing community band in Humboldt county. This is a group of community musicians of all ages and professions which performs at community functions throughout the year. Under the baton of Ken Ayoob they will perform First Suite in Eb for Military Band by Gustav Holst, which is one of the foundation pieces of the band literature. Next on the program is Little English Girl by David Della Cese, which is a tuneful concert march in the Italian Style, followed by Blessed Are They from the first movement of the Brahms German Requiem, a medley of music from Lerner and Loew’s classic Broadway show My Fair Lady, Ye Bands and Braes O’ Bonnie Doon which is a setting of the Scottish folk song by seminal wind composer Percy Grainger, and finally John Philip Sousa’s beloved march Fairest of the Fair. The concert will close with the two ensembles joining forces in a combined piece called Amparito Roca by the Spanish musician and composer Jaime Teixidor.
