Humboldt Bee Festival
Humboldt Bee Festival A celebration of all things to do with the honeybee, will take place May 9 and 10 at the Bayside Grange. Presented by the HCBA (Humboldt County Beekeepers Association), admission to Bee Fest is free. Bee Fest’s major sponsor is Eureka Natural Foods. Other sponsors include Chautauqua Natural Foods, Locally Delicious, the Bayside Grange, A& L Feed, Wildberries Marketplace and others. Bee Fest will kick off Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m. with a slide show by Portland botanist Rose Madrone entitled “Why Flowers Look the Way They Do.” Madrone is originally from Redway, CA. Following will be a screening of the documentary “Queen of the Sun”. The late film critic Roger Ebert called Queen of the Sun remarkable and revelatory. The 83-minute film takes us on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of the beehive. Popcorn will be available. On Saturday, May 10, there will be two talks, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Garrett Brinton, who has taught HSU’s beekeeping classes for the last five years, will talk about the importance of honeybees. Jamie Bucklin, president of the HCBA, will talk about the association’s educational program. [Lorna, I am waiting for a more specific title from Garrett and a sexier title from Jamie.] For children, there will be a scrap-craft workshop from 11 to 2 and a Magic Honey Puppet Show at 2 p.m. From 11 to 5, explore the Honeybee Marketplace of art, ceramics, beecraft, food and more. Singer-songwriter finalists will perform bee songs at 3 p.m. There will be live demonstration hives, local beekeepers to answer questions, and bee-friendly native plants. Come to Bee Fest to find out why bees matter and what each of us can do to ensure their survival. Admission is free. — Joy Thomas
