Humboldt Postcard Taxonomy

Humboldt County Library

Historical Society board member Steven Lazar presents “Humboldt Postcard Taxonomy” at the Humboldt County Historical Society program meeting on Saturday, October 1 at 1:00 p.m., in the first-floor conference room of the Humboldt County Library, 1313 Third Street, Eureka. Admission is free and everyone is invited. Steven Lazar, who is by day a planner in the Humboldt County Planning & Building Department, in his spare time remains a passionate collector of local historical postcards. Over the past several years he has spent many hours digitizing these postcards in order to share them via the Internet, with the result being The Humboldt Project at http://www.thehumboldtproject.org. In collecting thousands of postcards, Lazar has been able to discern patterns and trends over the years, leading him to define groupings for his collection. In this program, Lazar will present a PowerPoint slideshow of historical Humboldt postcards, demonstrating how they have evolved and developed over time, and how this reflects the general history of postcards throughout the country. It was in February 1861 that Congress first passed an act allowing privately printed cards to be sent in the mail, and that John P. Charlton copyrighted the first postcard in America. It was not until 1907, however, that the backs of postcards were divided and messages were allowed on the left side, issuing in the “Golden Age of Postcards,” which lasted until the beginning World War I. Join Steven Lazar for a tour through eras and places in Humboldt County via a grand showing of historical local postcards.
