Humboldt Roller Derby Training Camp

Redwood Acres Fairgrounds

ils Interested in camp? Please read the full description here! Do you want to join in the fun of playing roller derby? Humboldt Roller Derby is proud to continue our comprehensive training program - 17 amazing weeks of skating! Participants will develop their athletic ability, leadership and communication skills while learning the sport of roller derby – all to prepare skaters for joining an HRD team. Instructors will focus on activities that foster trust and communication between teammates while teaching proper skating form and techniques, team awareness, track positions, and basic derby strategy! The goal is to gain the knowledge and skills required to become a part of Humboldt Roller Derby while having fun in a safe environment! Participants will play by Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) rules, which allows for contact while skating and blocking. Every registered participant will participate in practices, but will be required to pass a skill assessment before participating in any full‐contact drills, scrimmages or bouts. Schedule: Camp starts on Tuesday, January 8th and runs for 17 weeks. Practices will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6:00pm ‐ 7:00pm. Practice will begin promptly so please arrive 10‐15 minutes early to allow enough time to gear up! Registration Information: Registration is first come first serve. Space is limited, so sign up early. Email the Training Camp Administrator at recruitment@humboldtrollerderby.com to sign up! Ability Level: Skaters need to be comfortable standing on their skates, be able to propel themselves forward without assistance, and be able to stop without falling or using their hands prior to their first day of training camp. Age Requirement: Participants must be at least 18 years old by the first day of practice. Schedule: Level 1 & Level 2: The Level 1 is our Basic Derby Skills Program. This camp lays the foundation needed to play the game of roller derby by teaching participants proper skating form, stops, falls, agility, strength building, and our awesome and supportive and culture. Level 2 focuses on more advanced physical skills, rules and gameplay. You are required to have passed our Assessment Test for Level 1 skills for this Intermediate class. A limited amount of loaner gear is available on a first come, first served basis! Skates and gear are available for purchase at S.T.I.L. on Broadway, next to Lots for Tots, in Eureka! Cost of the camp is $150 for 17 weeks, due at the start of camp.
