A highlight of the program will be “Four Rags for Two Jons” by John Novacek. Originally written for Jon Manasse on clarinet and Jon Nakamatsu on Piano, the piece will be performed by John Chernoff, piano, and Virginia Ryder, Clarinet. Novacek wrote about Ragtime, “Ragtime, that complex hybrid of black dance tunes filtered through the procedures of the polka, march, and white minstrel song. Classic ragtime flourished from 1895 to 1915 when a number of talented pianists gathered at Tom Turpin’s Rosebud Cafe in St. Louis. The greatest was Scott Joplin, whose infectiously syncopated marches conceal a solid compositional technique.”

Bootleg Hoedown by Brian Raphael Nabors will feature Cindy Moyer on violin, Virginia Ryder on Clarinet, Garrick Woods on cello, and John Chernoff on piano. Nabors writes of this piece, “Although not heavily involved with “hoedown” music, I knew of its deep cultural roots. Being (from) a southern city gives you the opportunity to experience many cultures within a modern town… “bootleg” generally refers to something that is fraudulent or not authentic. Being that my roots are mostly R&B, Gospel, and Jazz, this piece is a ‘bootleg’ of a hoedown; my remix of what a hoedown sounds like!”

“Three Rags,” A new composition written for this performance by John Chernoff, sees the reunion of the Vipisa Trio: Cindy Moyer, violin, Virginia Ryder, alto saxophone, and John Chernoff, piano.

A performance of William Bolcom’s “Graceful Ghost Rag,” originally written in 1970 for solo piano, and then arranged for violin and piano in 1979, will feature Ryan McGaughey, piano, and Cindy Moyer, violin.

Elizabeth Harrington, voice, will join John Chernoff, piano, for two Ragtime inspired pieces: “Wait ‘til the Sun Shines, Nellie” ( Lyrics by Andrew Sterling, Music by Harry von Tilzer) and “Jazz Baby” (Lyrics by Blanche Merrill; Music by M. K. Jerome)

A string quartet featuring Cindy Moyer & Julie Fulkerson on violin, Karen Davy on viola, and Dario Olanchea on bass will play some classic rags. One is a Scott Joplin rag called Pineapple Rag. Legend has it Scott Joplin (1868-1917) called it this because pineapple was his favorite fruit.

Another 2 rags by American composer George Botsford (1874-1949) will be performed. Born in the Midwest, but ending up in New York City, his “Black & White Rag” was one of his most successful pieces. Some people might recognize its theme from an old British computer game called Repton, but it was extremely popular when written as a piano rag in 1908.

The other Botsford rag is called “Chatterbox Rag”. It was picked for performance because two members of the quartet are New York Natives, “It’s considered a classic example of a NY rag also known as Tin Pan Alley Ragtime,” says violinist Karen Davy.
