Japan Tsunami Marine Debris
Help the NEC continue to monitor our coast for debris washing ashore from Japan’s 2011 catastrophic earthquake and tsunami.
Debris from the tsunami is likely to continue washing ashore for years to come. Documenting and reporting potential tsunami debris allows the California Coastal Commission and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to better understand the amount of debris that went into our oceans, where debris is coming ashore, and help evaluate possible impacts the debris may have on our natural resources, marine life and coastal communities.
The NEC monitors two locations on the North Coast: Samoa Beach in Humboldt County and Point St. George Beach in Del Norte County. NEC staff and volunteers like you clean up any trash, recycling or other debris we find, and also document anything that appears to be of Japanese make (such as traditional woodwork or Japanese markings) to report our findings to NOAA.
