Jazz is Peace: Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn

Arcata Playhouse

The program will explore the music and personal and working relationship of Duke and “Strays”, featuring well known classics (Take The A Train, the Ellington Orchestra’s theme song, written by Billy Strayhorn) and beautiful and evocative lesser known works. Duke’s composing is considered unique for his practice of writing for the specific individuals in his ensemble. Trombonist/arranger James Zeller is working with the same approach in arranging music for this event. The show will also feature (or so it is rumored) highlighted swing dancers and a special new composition for the occasion honoring Duke and Strayhorn. The ensemble will include James Zeller (trombone and a few vocal features), Tree (viola, chromatic harmonica, saxophones), Matt Seno (piano), Danny Gaon (double bass and bassoon), Ramsey Isaacs (drums), Allison Muench (alto saxophone), Nick Talvola (trumpet), and Katie Belknap (clarinet, bass clarinet and vocals). doors 6:30 pm show 7 pm.
