Humboldt poet Jerry Martien re-unites with four local musicians on Sunday, May 21 at the Arcata Playhouse. Fred Neighbor, Gary Davidson, and Mike LaBolle, who performed with Martien to a full house at the Playhouse last fall, will be joined by returning keyboardist Mike Emerson, who last backed up Martien’s reading in a 1999 performance recorded as Jerry Martien & the Band of Angels.

The evening’s first set will be dedicated to the memory of Thad Beckman, another long-time Arcata musician, who passed away at his home in Portland this winter. It will include poems that resurfaced in a cassette recording of Martien reading with Beckman at the Jambalaya Club in 1992. In rehearsals for that event they developed “porch blues,” which became the basis of three decades of music and spoken word.
