Jewish New Year Observance
The Jewish New Year will begin at sundown on Wednesday, September 20th with Rosh Hashanah (Head of the Year). This holiday is followed by a period of introspection and contemplation which concludes with a day of fasting and prayer called Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) beginning at sundown on Friday, September 29th. Rabbi Naomi Steinberg will lead Temple Beth El’s High Holy Day Services. Mezzo-soprano Bel Ami Margoles of Portland and tenor Berel Steinberg of Oakland will offer cantorial support. The Temple Beth El choir will also participate. They will be accompanied by pianists Jerryl Lynn Rubin and Carrie O’Neil, violinist Marnin Robbins, oboist Ellen Weiss and cellist Kira Weiss. Rabbi Naomi comments, “Rosh HaShanah is a time to reflect deeply on our actions, as individuals, as families and as a society. Am I living true to my values and vision? How can I curb bad habits and strengthen good habits? Can I treat others as I would have them treat me? We need this now more than ever as the nation grapples with outbursts of hatred and also struggles to respond to the combination of natural and human-made disasters. The Jewish High Holy Day season gives us an opportunity to meditate on our high ideals of justice, compassion, fairness, kindness and gratitude so we can better put them into action in the coming year.”
