Kayak the Mad River Slough on a King Tide

Humboldt Bay

Explore North Coast is hosting this kayak trip that runs through the scenic northern part of the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Area. We’ll ride the large incoming tide up the slough, passing the beautiful Lanphere Dunes.

Expect to see a lot of wildlife, as this is a birding haven (binoculars recommended).

Be prepared to launch by 10:30 AM (arrive by 10 am). Meet in Manila along state Highway 255 (Samoa Road) where its bridge crosses Mad River Slough by the old Sierra Pacific Industries mill. We’ll stop for lunch before riding the start of the ebb tide back to the launch.

This protected paddle is suitable for beginners and recreational boaters. The water will be cold so wet or dry suits are best, but a layered non-cotton and rain gear would also be suitable. Recommend that you bring lunch/snacks, water, and dry bag with some extra dry clothes should you get wet. You may also want to bring a tarp or ground cloth to sit on for our lunch rest stop. This paddle will last about 3 hours.
