Local Filmakers Night

From hand drawn to sophisticated software, animation styles are diverse and unique as those who create them. On Thursday, September 18, Local Filmmakers Night screening series will feature a few of those talented individual showcasing shorts made through a variety of software and techniques. The event, taking place at the Eureka High Lecture Hall on Humboldt and K Sts., will include the hand-drawn animated film “Salmon Deadly Sins” by local artist, Steven Vander Meer; futuristic science fiction 3D shorts made with Lightwave by visual artist Douglas Shrock (AKA Shrox); After Affects clips by Digital Media faculty at College of the Redwoods, Julie Stowe; a video and animation hybrid psy-fi short by Michael Harris; and an animated short made with Toonboom Studio by a Digital Media student at College of the Redwoods, Randy Grant. Local Filmmakers Night, a collaboration between Access Humboldt, Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission and Eureka High School Media Club, is a screening series that supports and promotes the local film community. These events offers an inside look at the filmmaking process by encouraging the filmmakers to share their challenges and learning. Local Filmmakers Night traditionally showcases shorts and excerpts which often demonstrate the artists’ progression as they hone down their skills. In this spirit, the creators chosen to be featured in this animation showcase come from different background and variable skill level, from the polished professional work to the passionate amateur and creative student work. Following the screening, attendees can enjoy Q & A session with the animators, movie trivia, prizes, and a reception at the adjacent Access Humboldt’s Community Media Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Screening starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per person and all are welcome to attend.
