Antonio Carlos Jobim Matinee Birthday Tribute

Arcata Playhouse

Join us for a matinee tribute to the great Brazilian bossa nova composer hosted by trombonist/vocalist James Zeller with special guests Hernan Rostan and Jennifer Trowbridge (and more!) and “J Street Regulars” Matt Seno on piano, Ramsey Isaacs on drums and Danny Gaon on double bass.

The late 1950s were a time of open artistic expression and freedom in Brazil. In this creative environment, Antonio Carlos Jobim (with guitarist João Gilberto and others) created a new style of Brazilian music heavily influenced by Samba and American jazz that became known as Bossa Nova.

Bossa spread world wide in the early ‘60s, becoming a new rhythmic flavor utilized by musicians, especially jazz players. But the period of freedom and cultural expression that birthed Bossa Nova was about to come to an abrupt end when a U.S. backed military coup seized power in 1964. Jobim (and many artists) fled to the U.S. and Brazil remained a military dictatorship for 21 years.

This show will speak to the history of American interventionism in Latin American, and Katie and James are working with Hernan to organize an after show musical celebration of different South American musical traditions.

James is working on original orchestrations of Jobim classics and a few lesser known gems to bring the community a show of Jobim “the Sanctuary way” Stay tuned for more details!

The first 50 ticket holders for Jobim tribute gain free entry to our LatinoAmerican event which directly follows this one.
