North Coast Choral Artists Concert

Christ Episcopal Church

The North Coast Choral Artists is a new Humboldt County based choral workshop and performance project launched by Dr. Rachel Samet, who has spent the past four years directing the choral program at Humboldt State University’s Department of Music. She has designed the workshop for experienced and skilled choral singers who are looking for a short-term but meaningful choral experience. With a commitment of just four evenings per week for two weeks, Samet and her singers will explore, prepare, and polish a healthy handful of choral compositions ranging from classical repertoire to brand new compositions reflecting both the challenging and hopeful aspects of the times in which we live. The high point of this choral experience will be the act of sharing the music with the Humboldt community at large in a celebratory concert presented at the stunning Christ Episcopal Church of Eureka on Saturday, June 15th at 8:00 pm. The title of the concert, “Faith, Courage, Life, Love,” is inspired by the compositions Samet has chosen to share with both the singers and their audience; intimate choral music that celebrates the human spirit through an eclectic mix of sacred and secular repertoire that spans several centuries and sensibilities. “The music I selected for this concert emphasizes faith, humanity and courage,” says Samet. “I hope it will be an emotionally powerful and uplifting experience for both singers and audience.” Highlights of the program include “Elohim Hashivenu” by Italian Baroque Jewish composer Salamone Rossi, the grand “Every Life Shall Be a Song” for choir and organ by contemporary American composer Gwyneth Walker, and American composer Andrea Ramsey’s “That Which Remains,” based on a text by Helen Keller. The emotional centerpiece of the program is a work called “Please Stay” by Minnesota-based composer Jake Runestad. Known for his imaginative and socially conscious texts, Runestad composed “Please Stay” as an attempt to destigmatize mental illness and support those who are battling depression and thoughts of suicide. Needless to say, the message is affirming, and positive. North Coast Choral Artists, a DreamMaker Project of the Ink People, will perform on Saturday, June 15th at 8:00 pm at Christ Episcopal Church, 1428 H Street, Eureka CA. Suggested donations of $15 for general admission, and $5 for college students are encouraged.
