Pony Express Days

Pony Express Days is a town celebration that was established in 1968. This year will mark the 50th Annual Celebration.  It is a week long community event that includes a Chili Cook-off, Barn Dance, Pancake Breakfast, Parade down Central Avenue and culminates in the big Family Festival in Pierson Park, with a horse shoe tournament as well as lots of fun activities for the kids. There are also food and craft vendors and the Pony Express Saloon.  On Saturday & Sunday there is a Gymkhana, which is a series of competitive games on horseback. THE FIREMAN’S MUSTER IS BACK FOR THE 50-YEAR CELEBRATION!!

Kick-off Mixer (Thursday, May 24): 

Kick-off the 50th Anniversary by joining us at the Chamber Mixer. State Farm-Heather Vina will have her Family Fun Zone set up and we will be holding the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting ceremony during the mixer. Grocery Outlet will be providing the food and beverages and a wine tasting with their wine expert. Join us at 1631 Sutter Road starting at 5:30 p.m.

Chili Cook-off (Wednesday, May 30): To commemorate the 50-year celebration, we are shaking things up a bit. The Chili Cook-off will be an outdoor event for the first time! The cook-off will be held in the McKinleyville Shopping Center at 1500 City Center Road. All Chili will be cooked on-site, beginning at noon and the cook-off will start at 5:30 pm. Fireman’s Muster (Thursday, May 31): Members of the Arcata Fire Department will be joined by other fire department personnel to participate in a Fireman’s Muster. Join us in the upper parking lot at Pierson Park. Bring your picnic blankets and lawn chairs and help us to cheer on our local fire fighter’s as they perform various water activities including a Bucket Brigade and Hose Relay. McKinleyville Little League will be selling Indian Tacos along with other goodies. This promises to be a fun filled evening.

Indoor Dance (Friday, June 1): The dance will be at Azalea Hall this year. A great evening is planned with live music by Lone Star Junction. Food and beverages will be available and adult beverages will be served by Six Rivers Brewery.

Pancake Breakfast (Saturday, June 2): Join us at Azalea Hall from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for some tasty hotcakes with sausage and three types of scrambled eggs to choose from. This event is hosted by the Dow’s Prairie Community Grange, which hosts a monthly breakfast on the third Saturday of every month at the grange building.

Parade (Saturday, June 2): The participants will line up on Murray Road, near the high school. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. and run on Central Avenue from Murray Road to School Road. Click HERE for the participant application.

Festival (Saturday, June 2): The festival will be in Pierson Park from noon until 4 p.m. Live music by TAXI. There will be vendors from near and far with a variety of items for sale. There will also be food and beverages and a kids corner with several activities for the youth. Click HERE for the vendor packet.

Horseshoe Tournament (Saturday, June 2): The horseshoe tournament will be from 1 to 4 pm with check-in at 12:45. Two person teams and participants must be 18 and over. Click HERE for the registration form.
