“Possibilities and Belonging”

Fulkerson Recital Hall

The Cal Poly Humboldt Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre presents “Possibility and Belonging,” a program with music ranging from the Middle Ages to the present, featuring Cal Poly Humboldt’s University Singers and Humboldt Chorale. The performance is Friday, December 9th at 8:00 p.m. at the Fulkerson Recital Hall, Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata, Ca. Concert tickets are $10 General, $5 Children, and FREE for Cal Poly Humboldt students with ID. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at centerarts.humboldt.edu.

The program will open with Humboldt Chorale singing Canadian composer Sarah Quartel’s Wide Open Spaces, a joyous reflection on the journeys and adventures to be found in the wide open spaces within us and in the world around us. Humboldt Chorale will also perform Antonio Vivaldi’s classic Gloria in excelsis Deo, accompanied by music department faculty members Cindy Moyer (violin), Karen Davy (violin), and Garrick Woods (cello). Minneapolis-based composer Jocelyn Hagen’s powerful Belong, which features Larry Pitts on the piano, presents a timeless message of creating and celebrating community, even during times of hardship. The first half of the program closes with Joshua Jacboson’s upbeat arrangement of Ocho Kandelikas (Eight Candles), sung in Ladino. The piece celebrates the lighting of candles at Chanukah and features student guitarists and percussionists.

University Singers will open the second half of the program with Brazilian composer Ernani Aguiar’s rhythmically exciting Salmo 150. An additional highlight is Fred Squatrito’s heartfelt arrangement of the Kentucky folk tune Bright Morning Star, which reflects on generations past and expresses gratitude for the present moment.

One of the most unique pieces of the program is Katerina Gimon’s contemporary arrangement of Hildegard von Bingen’s chant O Virtus Sapientiae. St. Hildegard was an abbess who lived during the Middle Ages, and in addition to being an extraordinary composer, she was also a poet, mystic, visionary, and medical writer and practitioner. Gimon’s contemporary arrangement of Hildegard’s music preserves the original plainchant and adds subtle contemporary techniques such as overtone singing.

University Singers will also perform Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann’s joyous Laudate Jehovam, omnes gentes with faculty string players and John Chernoff on harpsichord. Max Janowski’s Avinu Malkeynu is a powerful plea for better things to come in the new year, and features tenor Pablo Murcia. Stomp on the Fire by Andrea Ramsey tells a story without words. The composer says of the piece, “Stomp on the Fire was conceived as an entirely human work, using only the sounds of the voice and the percussive sounds of the body to create an expression of our collective journey.”

The program will conclude with both choirs joining together for the exuberant and funky Everybody Rejoice from the 1970’s musical The Wiz. Conductor Rachel Samet says of the program, “The singers and I are so excited to present this diverse program. With music old and new, poignant and lighthearted, we hope that the audience feels uplifted by the unique expression of each piece and a sense of community with the performers.” It is sure to be a powerful and exciting concert you won’t want to miss!
