Preparing for Winter with a Super El Niño

Jefferson Community Center

Up here on the Humboldt coast we already live with wet winters, so a super El Niño is less about “will it rain” and more about how hard and how often it rains. Forecasts this September point to a very strong—possibly historic—El Niño through winter 2026–27, the kind that tends to shove the storm track south and raise the odds of atmospheric rivers hitting Northern California. That can mean weeks of bees locked inside, flooded or soggy apiary sites, blocked entrances (for the higher elevation folks), and the real winter killer on the North Coast: condensation dripping onto the cluster. Cold alone rarely takes Humboldt colonies; damp/wet does. So winter prep this year should treat moisture as the first problem, not an afterthought!
